ROOTING FOR RANGERS
In 1999, despite having to play 7 games in 23 days, Sir Alex Ferguson led Manchester United to a Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup treble. This Wednesday amidst, playing 7 games in 18 days, Rangers manager Walter Smith will lead his team out in the UEFA Cup Final at the City of Manchester stadium. Sir Alex Ferguson tells Sue McCann why he believes his close friend Walter Smith can win the UEFA Cup to remain on course for a quadruple.

“Well it is an incredible achievement for Walter Smith and it is outstanding particularly given the programme of fixtures that they have. Rangers will come down here with 70,000 fans or so and it will be fantastic; Manchester will never have seen anything like it in their life.

“Rangers certainly can win it; there is no question about that. I think they are playing a very good team in Zenit St Petersburg when you look at the record they have had in this cup competition. However Russian teams in finals have never really been that great when you look through the history of the game so Rangers have an outstanding chance.”
