Durban was born in Port Talbot, Wales, making his playing debut for Cardiff City in 1959. He went on to play for Derby County and Shrewsbury Town, as well as being capped by Wales 27 times.
His managerial career began at Shrewsbury in 1974. He remained with the Shrews until 1978, when he joined Stoke City. It was with Stoke that he gained promotion to the 1st Division in 1979. However, in the summer of 1981 Durban left Stoke to take the reins at Sunderland. After failing to make an impact at Roker Park, Durban left Sunderland in March 1984.
Durban then went on to manage Willington in the Northern League, before returnoign to Cardiff, this time as manager.
Durban briefly acted as Caretaker-Manager for Stoke City for 5 games in the 1997/98 season.
