Peter Shirtliff was most recently the assistant manager of Bury.
He joined Bury from Swindon where he achieved some notable success with manager Danny Wilson. Having finished four points from relegation the previous campaign, Shirtliff remarkably helped guide Swindon to the League One play-off final at Wembley in May 2010, where the side narrowly missed out on promotion to Millwall.
Shirtliff joined Swindon from Tranmere Rovers after managing Mansfield Town in the football League. Prior to his spell at Mansfield, he began his coaching career with the youth teams at Barnsley and Leicester City.
During his playing days, he made more than 500 appearances in the Football League for Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton Athletic, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Barnsley and Carlisle United.
At Wednesday his achievements included promotion from the Second Division in 1983–84, a third-place finish in the First Division in the 1991–92 season, and a League Cup-winners' medal in 1991.
He is also a graduate of the LMA's Certificate of Applied Management at Warwick University.
