STEVE
WHITTON

Steve's playing career saw him play at the top level with Birmingham, Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich Town and Colchester United, although his greatest days were spent at his boyhood heroes, West Ham United.

Injury forced him out of the game early in 1998 and led him to concentrate on coaching as assistant to Steve Wignall at Colchester United. In his time as Assistant Manager, Steve helped guide the U's to two Wembley appearances, including the 1998 Play-Off Final, where they gained promotion to Nationwide League Division Two.

In January 1999, Steve took over as Caretaker-Manager before the arrival of Mick Wadsworth, reverting back to Assistant Manager thereafter. Wadsworth resigned just weeks into the start of the 1999/2000 season however and Steve took permanent charge of the team.

He was dismissed on January 29 2003 with the team lying third from bottom of Division Two and in serious danger of relegation.

Without a win from his last seven games in charge it was a disappointing end to his three-and-a-half year reign at Layer Road after working tirelessly for the Essex club.
