Walter Smith OBE
WALTER
SMITH OBE

Walter Smith OBE has enjoyed a glittering career, and behind Bill Struth, he is the second most successful manager in the history of Glasgow Rangers.

In 1978 he became assistant boss to the Scottish youth team under Andy Roxburgh. He then returned to Dundee United as Jim McLean's number two in 1982 and in1983 they won the Scottish title.

Smith then became Graeme Souness' right hand man in 1986 at Rangers and also went to the Mexico World Cup as Alex Ferguson's number two.

Walter took over as Rangers manager in 1991 and he guided them to their third championship and the double in his first full season. In 1993 Rangers embarked on a 44 match unbeaten run to win the fifth treble in their illustrious history.

Smith was awarded an OBE as Rangers clinched title win number nine. He also became the first manager at Rangers to be awarded a testimonial.

In 1998, he became manager of Everton and later again assistant to Sir Alex at Man Utd.
Smith then replaced Berti Vogts as manager of the Scottish National Team and helped revive their fortunes before he returned to Ibrox.

In 2008/09, Smith guided Rangers to the UEFA Cup Final, as well as two further Championship titles and the Scottish and League Cup.

Smith again led his team to a Scottish League Cup triumph over Celtic in 2010/11, securing his 20th trophy at Ibrox. He then went on to secure his third consecutive Scottish Premier League title, which made for a perfect send-off, for a remarkable career with Glasgow Rangers.
