IMPORTANT WIN AT OLD TRAFFORD EARNS SOUTHAMPTON THE ACCOLADE
The League Managers Association five-man Performance of the Week panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, were in agreement that this week the newly sponsored and longstanding LG Performance of the Week Award should go to Southampton following their excellent 1 - 0 victory against Manchester United in the Barclays Premier League on Sunday 11th January 2015. The experienced and highly distinguished panel has managed a combined total of over 6,000 competitive matches in professional football. Southampton manager Ronald Koeman will receive a specially commissioned trophy made by world renowned silversmiths and LMA Partner, Thomas Lyte of London, in a presentation to commemorate the award. This is Southampton’s second award of the season. Previously, they received it following their 8 - 0 demolition of Sunderland last October, and it comes in a week when they have also progressed in The FA Cup having beaten Ipswich Town in a hard fought replay at Portman Road on Wednesday night. On Sunday afternoon Southampton showed why they have the best defensive record in the top-flight this season by denying Manchester United any chance of a goal and ended The Reds undefeated sequence with a 70th minute strike which sealed their fifth win away from home which moved them above United into third place in the table. This was a famous win for Southampton who had not won a match at Old Trafford for 27 years.
