LG PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: COOK’S LATICS STUN ELLAND ROAD
The League Managers Association’s panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle and Dave Bassett, has determined that the LG Performance of the Week Award should go to Wigan Athletic for their 1-2 victory against Leeds United on Friday 19th April 2019.
The experienced and highly distinguished panel has managed a combined total of over 5,500 competitive matches in professional football.
Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook will receive a celebratory bottle of champagne, courtesy of Tanners Wines, and an LG Performance of the Week trophy in a presentation to commemorate the result.
Down to 10 men, the promotion-chasing hosts have a penalty, 34,000 home supporters creating a vociferous atmosphere and you’ve not won away since August.
That is what Paul Cook’s Latics were faced with after just 15 minutes of Good Friday’s clash at Elland Road.
Pablo Hernandez saw his spot-kick saved by Christian Walton but just minutes later Patrick Bamford gave Marcelo Bielsa’s side the lead and Cook, his players and around 700 travelling supporters were fearing the worst.
But in times of adversity, you discover who you are and what you are made of and Latics’ effort to get back in the game was sensational. Gavin Massey, who must have made more high intensity sprints this afternoon that he ever has before, fired Latics level on the stroke of half-time. On the hour mark, he then scored what turned out to be the winner as he headed home following a brilliant assist from Leon Clarke.
