The League Managers Association’s five-man panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, has determined that the LG Performance of the Week Award should go to Newport County for their vital 2-1 victory against Notts County in Sky Bet League Two on Saturday 6th May 2017, which secured their EFL status.

The experienced and highly distinguished panel has managed a combined total of over 6,000 competitive matches in professional football.

Newport County Manager Mike Flynn will receive a celebratory bottle of champagne, courtesy of Tanners Wines, and a LG Performance of the Week trophy in a presentation to commemorate the result.

Match Report

Newport County AFC is SAFE after a 2-1 win over Notts County.

They say lightning doesn’t strike twice but County didn’t get that memo as in scenes like those from 40 years ago, County again secured safety on the final day. This time, Mark O’Brien was the County hero as his 89th minute winner saw the Exiles secure their place in League 2 for next season.

That came after Jorge Grant had cancelled out Mickey Demetriou’s opener. And just as it looked like County may slip out of League football, O’Brien popped up with a priceless winner.

The ‘Great Escape’ had been accomplished.
