He made his debut as a coach in his home club in 1988, and then managed at Palestino, O'Higgins, Universidad Católica and again Palestino. In 199, he had his first international experience in Liga Universitaria de Quito (Ecuador), from where he moved to Argentinean football to successfully coach San Lorenzo de Almagro and River Plate.

His adventure in England began in 2013. In his first season at Manchester City, he won the Premier League and the EFL Cup. In his second season he won again the EFL Cup. Between 201 and 2018, he was at Hebei China Fortune, in the Chinese Superleague and at West Ham United in 2018 and 2019.
He has won one Copa de Chile; one Ecuadorian league; two Clausura Trophies in Argentina; one Premier League and two EFL Cups in England; and one Copa Interamericana.
