McCARTHY HAPPY WITH HIS LOT

The reaction from Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy was one of delight when his side was drawn against Germany, Cameroon and Saudi Arabia in the 2002 World Cup Finals.

The Yorkshireman was relieved to be able to look forward to the finals and be able to prepare for the three group games.

He said: "I'm pleased. You look at the games and you know that you have plenty of time to prepare," said the Irish manager whose team will be based in Japan for the group stage.

"I played against Germany before the 1990 World Cup when we drew 1-1 in Dublin."

McCarthy's men face two other sets of opponents that are less familiar.

"I don't think we've ever played the other two teams but I do know a bit about Saudi Arabia as there was a chance we might have met them in the play-off," said McCarthy.

"It's going to be difficult because we won't know what to expect against Cameroon but we've plenty of time to prepare.

"At this stage we can't really afford to think beyond the first game against Cameroon but obviously a lot of people will be talking about the Germany game."

McCarthy was keen to make clear that one heavy defeat at home to England in the qualifiers would only serve to punish anyone who dared to expect an easy game against the Germans.

He said: "Germany were spanked at home by England but they recovered very well to give Ukraine a hiding in the play-off. It will be tough."

Not only do Ireland have to beat three quality teams, they will need to overcome humidity that will border on the oppressive. McCarthy might be confident that Ireland can give Germany a game but there is nothing he can do about the weather in Japan.

"I've only been able to get four and a half hours sleep since I've got here so that's something we've got to think about. I'm heading back home now where hopefully I'll get a few decent nights' sleep."
