Sir Alex Ferguson was pleased with his team's performance in an emphatic 3-0 win over Boavista at Old Trafford on Wednesday night and is hoping to carry that form into the Premiership.
Manchester United put themselves in pole position to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League once again with an assured display against the Portuguese champions that delighted the animated home crowd.
Having conceded six goals since taking a 1-0 lead against Arsenal two weeks ago and with talk of their title challenge being over already this season, United needed to put in a solid performance to restore some pride and confidence at Old Trafford, and they duly obliged.
Two goals from the swashbuckling Ruud van Nistelrooy and a well taken header from Laurent Blanc ensured that United's losing streak came to an end and put them top of Group A, level on points with arch-rivals Bayern Munich.
Speaking on ITV after the game, Sir Alex said: "It was a good team performance - we kept our shape and discipline well and that made a difference.
"The first goal gave us confidence and in the second half we did very well too.
"We had a few good individual displays - and we haven't lost a goal. We showed good team discipline.
After seeing his team's chances of capturing a fourth straight Premiership title written off by many in the last fortnight - although not by any of his fellow professionals - the United boss was proud of the way his players responded and is hopeful they can carry their European form into their domestic fixtures.
"It shows what we're capable of - although I think we all knew what we were capable of anyway," he said.
"But we can put things to bed until February (United's next Champions League game, against Nantes) and go and try and regain some form in the league. That is important."
