UNITED BOSS HAILS ENGLISH EURO HOPES

Sir Alex Ferguson believes that English clubs could be poised to renew their domination of Europe again following three great Champions League results this week.

Manchester United secured a fantastic 0-0 draw against Valencia in the Mestalla stadium last night and Ferguson believes their result completed a great 24 hours for English interests.

United's draw leaves them in pole position for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals for their fifth consecutive year.

Meanwhile, Leeds and Arsenal are also well on course to make the last eight following their victories in the competition over Anderlecht and Lyon respectively.

The results are enough to make Ferguson believe that Italian domination of the tournament could soon be at an end - bringing in an era of regular English and Spanish winners.

"I think that the Leeds' result was a good one because they were 1-0 down with not long to go in the game," said Ferguson.

"And Arsenal did well, although maybe not in as hard a game.

"We're pleased with our result and maybe ourselves and the Spanish sides are going to have a period where we start to do well in European football."

United currently lead Group A on seven points and need just one more win from three remaining games to achieve Ferguson's qualifying target of 10 points.

Valencia, who are two points behind United, struggled to break down a resolute United defence and Ferguson was particularly pleased with their performance at the back.

"The team defended well and they had to because Valencia produced some excellent moments, particularly through Mendieta and once or twice through Aimar.

"They've had to defend well, the back four and the goalkeeper, and I'm happy with that."
