Sir Alex Ferguson has kindly agreed to bring a Manchester United XI to Chesterfield to play in a Testimonial for ex-Spireites manager John Duncan at Saltergate on Saturday 27th July 2002.
The game, which will also serve as part of the Red Devils' pre-season warm-up, will kick-off at 3.00pm, and the Manchester United supreme said: "The team going to Chesterfield will be as strong as possible, with a squad full of internationals."
John Duncan managed Chesterfield for 11 years in his two spells at the club, famously taking them to within a whisker of the FA Cup final in 1997. He was dismissed by in April 2000 and has not received a penny in compensation since.
John was overwhelmed by the news that Sir Alex Ferguson would be bringing a team to play against the Second Division side on his behalf.
"It's a great gesture on Sir Alex' and Manchester United's part," he said.
"I've known him for 30 years and he's always been supportive of managers in lower leagues.
"He was especially concerned at the situation regarding the non-payment of compensation after I, and my assistant Kevin Randall, left the club.
John added: "He is the greatest and most successful manager of his generation and ranks alongside, if not above, the legendary figures of Jock Stein, Bill Shankly and Matt Busby.
"I couldn't be more ecstatic or grateful that Manchester United are coming to Chesterfield.
"They've been the best and most entertaining team in the country over a number of years and are full of talented world class players.
"I have been in awe of their achievements and I'm sure the match will be a spectacle for everyone."
