SPIRIT KEEPS TAYLOR TEAM SUPREME

Leicester manager Peter Taylor has showered praise on his Leicester side for the progress they have made after they put in a determined display to beat in-form Liverpool on Saturday.

The Foxes took three valuable Premiership points against Gerard Houllier's men after a tough clash at Filbert Street, with Muzzy Izzet scoring in the last minute to seal a satisfying victory for the home side after Ade Akinbiyi had given them the lead early in the second-half.

Speaking exclusively to Leaguemanagers.com, a delighted Peter Taylor said:

"I was very satisfied because I felt we were together as a team and that was the most important thing. We did say that Liverpool had such talent in their team - they've got such good midfield players and good passers.

"We had to defend together and I thought we did that.

"At times in the past we've let ourselves down when people have been too desperate to win the game, they go and try to defend it on their own. We defended as a team."

The Leicester and England coach explained how his team had won the tactical battle in midfield and managed to hold on to their one-goal lead for a large period of the game before making the points safe.

"It was a typical 5:3:2 versus 4:4:2 situation.

"We know that their full-backs are going to hurt us with the ball because we can't get at them as their wide midfield players are taking our wing-backs away.

"But of course the plus point for us is that we have the extra body in the middle of the park. They have then to send somebody over - if they do that we can get our opposite wing-back in.

"Both teams hurt each other but thankfully for us we got the first goal. It settled us down and overall some of our passing was as good as we've seen this year.

"Our strength at times is that we deliberately stay deep," he continued.

"It worries me as a manager but, fortunately for us, people like Matt Elliott, Gerry Taggart and Gary Rowett are such good headers of the ball from opposition crosses.

"If you defend deep it means that you are encouraging teams to hit balls into you but if you handle it, it's then not going to hurt you too much."

Taylor paid tribute to the man who secured the victory that put Leicester level on points with their defeated opponents.

"Muzzy Izzet is a tremendous player, he's now scored 10 goals this season.

"He's a very serious player about his football and he's great to work with. When he gets around that box he's so clinical.

"It was nice for us to finish off that way."
