Mick McCarthy has promised Sunderland fans that his team will fight every inch of the way to stay in the Barclaycard Premiership.
The Black Cats next game is a trip to Upton Park to face fellow strugglers West Ham, and the boss has pledged that the team will keep battling over the remaining eight fixtures.
Sunderland are now ten points from safety and have been written off by many, but after performing miracles with the Republic of Ireland, McCarthy is refusing to thrown in the towel.
"We'll keep scrapping, we'll keep trying to win games, and we'll keep annoying the opposition and trying to take points off them for as long as we possibly can, until the 11th of May," he said.
The former Milwall manager has also admitted that whatever happens over the rest of the season, he will be putting his own stamp on the club: "There will be changes, no question! I accepted that, it was part of the task.
"Perhaps there needs to be changes, when people get used to that mentality where they lose games, and it hurts still then maybe it needs freshening up," he declared.
The Yorkshireman was under no illusions as to the size of the challenge of getting enough points to keep the side up, describing it as "an incredibly difficult task", adding: "… that's why that wasn't the only task that was set."
He has been keen to stress that he is trying to take a long-term view for the good of the club, saying: "Thankfully I'm in the position that if the worst does happen, I'll have had nine games to assess everything about the club - players, staff, everything that goes with my job."
