FERGIE PRAISES 'PHENOMENAL' RUUD

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson hailed his prolific front-man Ruud van Nistelrooy after the Dutchman equalled Denis Law's club record of 28 European goals.

Van Nistelrooy drew level with the United legend with a goal on the stroke of half-time against VfB Stuttgart last night. His goal tally, which is outstanding in itself, is even more impressive when you consider that it's taken him just 30 games to amass them, leaving him with an astonishing strike ratio.

But it was evident last night that van Nistelrooy is much more than just a goal-poacher. The strength and vision he displayed for United's second goal was world class. He shrugged off three challenges on the half-way line and then produced a sublime through ball for Giggs to latch onto and finish.

Ferguson was full of praise for his lethal weapon: "Ruud has a phenomenal record but he is a phenomenal player.

"I have seen the replay of his goal. It wasn't the easiest chance in the world but he completely wrong-footed the goalkeeper.

"Ruud has improved his all-round game but that had come with the time he has spent with us.

"You are seeing a more complete player than last year. He is more rounded now, which is something that started to come through at the back end of last season.

"He is getting better all the time and the great thing is he has got years ahead of him."

United hardly got out of second gear and strolled to victory over a Stuttgart side who have impressed many this year. Fergie could even afford to rest his two match-winners for the crucial derby fixture with neighbours Manchester City on Saturday.
