Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Manchester United will be hoping to hit Bayern Munich on the counter-attack as they look to reverse a 1-0 deficit from the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final in Germany on Wednesday night.
The United boss believes that Bayern boss Ottmar Hitzfeld will have the greater tactical problems going into the game at the Olympicstadion as his team attempt to hold on to their one-goal advantage.
The fact that Paolo Sergio’s goal at Old Trafford is an ‘away goal’ makes little difference as United must score whatever happens to avoid elimination at the quarter-final stage for the second year in succession and Ferguson believes his team have only one real choice.
Speaking in an news/interview/419exclusive interview on this site, Sir Alex said:
“I think its more a question of how Bayern are going to approach it.
“I think 0-0 would have been a good result for us, in the situation that we were going away from home knowing the away goal could be a killer for us.
“Unfortunately that goal three minutes from time has made it very difficult for us.
“We’ll have to try and get on to the counter-attack but in the nature of our football we are very capable of going there and getting the result we want.
“It won’t be easy but when you get to the quarter-finals of the champions league you don’t expect it to be easy.
“It will be a very difficult game but we are very capable of winning it.”
United proved two years ago that they are indeed capable of scoring twice against Bayern, in the most dramatic fashion, and their manager knows that his side almost always pull something out of the bag when the odds are against them.
He feels that the German side has changed very little since that famous final in the Nou Camp and he is hoping for a similar outcome.
“They are exactly the same,” he declared. “They are very organized. If you look at Bayern since the European cup final, they have only added one player to the squad really.
”We have improved in certain aspects but I do feel that this season we have been too up-and-down with our form - there has not been the same consistent level of top performance that we expect of our team.
“It’s come to a point where the chips are down, and in that situation we normally do well.”
