TAYLOR RELISHING DUAL ROLE

Peter Taylor insists he can cope with the dual responsibility of managing Hull City while taking charge of England's Under-21s on a part-time basis.

Taylor has been re-appointed as the England Under-21 coach, four years after his shock departure from the position, which was taken up by the then FA technical director Howard Wilkinson.

In the intervening years he has managed Gillingham, Leicester and Brighton – winning promotion with The Gills and The Seagulls - and is now in charge at Hull, where he has also won promotion to the Second Division, now called Coca Cola League One.

The 51-year-old will remain with The Tigers, for at least the remaining year of his contract, and will coach the England youngsters part-time, which he believes is a manageable task.

Having achieved considerable success with the Under-21s during his four years in charge previously, Taylor will be hoping for more of the same as he steps back into the role left vacant by David Platt's dismissal.

Then he helped the likes of Frank Lampard, Jamie Carragher and Emile Heskey - all in England's Euro 2004 senior squad - make the step up at international level.

Taylor told PA Sport: "What I want to get across is that being with the Under-21s again will not affect Hull City one iota. I will be part-time with the Under-21s and I am very confident that both jobs can be done successfully.

"I was approached by the FA in the close-season to take on the Under-21s full-time but I did not want to leave Hull early.

"They've been excellent to me, I've got a great relationship with the chairman and the supporters and I did not want to let the club down.

"I've got another season at Hull definitely and ideally there would be the chance to keep both roles going after that."

Taylor stressed that he bears no grudge against Wilkinson – chairman of the LMA - or the FA for ending his previous tenure with the Under-21s. Indeed, he was asked to take temporary charge of the senior England side for one game, along with Steve McClaren, following Kevin Keegan's departure in 2000, and it was he who first handed David Beckham the captaincy.

He then continued to work as a coach under Sven-Goran Eriksson for a short time before standing down from his role with England to focus fully on his job at Leicester.

The Hull boss commented: "There are different people at the FA now and it was not a case of myself leaving after doing poorly. Howard Wilkinson wanted to run the Under-21s and I respect that.

"But it is great to be involved with England again and if we can manage to do the same as before, and get a few players into the senior squad, then it will be it would be fantastic.

"The senior squad is younger than ever now but the message to the players now is keep turning up for matches - and they can see that people like Frank Lampard, Jamie Carragher and Emile Heskey have shown what can happen."

Sammy Lee, who has been working with England for some time on a part-time basis, was appointed as a full-time coach with the FA on Thursday. The former Liverpool player and coach will again work with Taylor and will have a major input, particularly during times when The Tigers boss has to concentrate fully on his responsibilities at the Kington Communications Stadium.
