MK Dons manager Danny Wilson was sent to the stand on the advice of the Fourth Official in their home game v Chesterfield on 15th October 2005. He requested a Personal Hearing and was completely cleared by an F.A. Commission.
Danny was represented by the LMA and spoke exclusively to leaguemanagers.com about his case.
“The Hearing went very well, I’d like to think the FA.Commission that headed my enquiry are as fair with everybody as they have been to me. They’ve listened intently, both, to my side, and to the Fourth Official’s side and thankfully they have come out in my favour. It was a very fair Hearing, I felt comfortable with all the points that were made by the LMA and they spoke terrifically well on my behalf. Overall we came out with a good result. It was something I expected anyway because I didn’t feel the incident warranted coming down to FA headquarters in the first place.”
Danny feels that the Technical Area and the Fourth Official’s job is fraught with problems.
“The Fourth Official’s job is tough because he takes the brunt of a lot of the decisions the referee makes. He is the nearest point of relief for a manager. However, the way they handle it can take the heat out of so many situations. That could have happened in my situation, for a split second you get upset with an incident but you can get calmed down by a good 4th Official. All you need is a word in the ear but unfortunately at times the 4th Officials inflame situations by the way they speak to you or even order you, they do sometimes bring problems on themselves.”
Danny is also very aware that managers have responsibilities in the Technical Area.
“We have to curtail our emotions, sometimes outbursts do happen but that’s a natural thing that happens in football. It is an emotive game but we have to have responsibilities as managers to make sure that emotion doesn’t spill over into personal abuse. Thankfully, in my case that didn’t happen. This is a situation managers must take control of, if we want to control our players.”
