TAYLOR SCOTCHES UNDER-21 RUMOURS

Leicester City manager Peter Taylor has pledged his future to the club after speculation linking him with a return to his former post as manager of England's under-21s.

Reports suggested that the FA were ready to approach Taylor and Leicester City chairman John Elsom with a view to bringing the Foxes boss back into the England set-up on a permanent basis to replace Howard Wilkinson, the man who took over from him as under-21s manager in 1999.

After some poor results in the U-21 European Championship qualifying campaign, including the recent 3-1 defeat to Greece, it was believed that the FA would like Wilkinson to concentrate on his role as the Association's Techncial Director and develop the new national academy.

Meanwhile Taylor would take over in charge of England's youngsters as he is groomed to become the successor to Sven-Goran Eriksson at senior level.

However, Taylor has confirmed that he will not be leaving Filbert Street and that he is happy to continue working with England's national team on a part-time basis as long as it does not interfere with his club commitments.

"Of course, I have seen all the speculation but I have never discussed the Under-21 job with the FA because I would not have been interested in it," the Leicester boss insisted.

"I am very focused on being Leicester City's manager and I want to see it through. I love it here. I love the club and everything about the place.

"We had mainly a very good season, were in the top six for two thirds of the season pushing for an European spot and the England role never interfered in any way.

"But because the last two months of the season were a disaster, people tried to make out that the England situation had something to do with it which was nonsense."

Taylor admitted that his future involvement in the England set-up has yet to be decided but he hopes to be able to continue in a similar capacity to that of last season.

"The arrangement with England ended after the Greece game and in terms of my future involvement with the national side I am completely in the hands of our chairman John Elsom," he said.

"He will be having discussions with the FA next week and as far as I am concerned, the job here has been the most important thing of all.

"Sure, I enjoy being with England - but only if John is happy. The club job comes first and always has done."
