12 Aug 2010 LMA CHAIRMAN HAILS STEVE COPPELL
"The announcement of Steve Coppell’s sudden resignation today is both sad but at the same time extremely admirable.
"It is sad in terms of the fact that in announcing his retirement, the game has lost one of its outstanding English managers and it is admirable in that it is a brave decision for any manager who is fortunate enough to hold one of the coveted 92 positions to decide to relinquish the job, particularly at such an early stage of the season. Although his decision comes as a shock, Steve clearly felt that it was the right judgment and he had the integrity and courage to make this decision in a timely manner.
"Since setting out on his managerial career at the age of 28, Steve has had 27 years of almost continual success in football management. He most notably achieved promotions and further achievements at clubs where resources were frequently and extremely limited. For this, he was recognised by his peers and presented with the LMA Manager of the Year Award in two consecutive years.
"Steve's playing career was, regretfully, prematurely ended through injury but during his playing days he was one of Manchester United’s most talented right wingers and, in fact, he is still the record holder for the most consecutive first team appearances for the club - 207. Not only did he earn some of the highest accolades, he also represented his country on 42 occasions. In addition to his on pitch successes, he also completed a degree in Economics whilst playing professional football.
"His knowledge and expertise was extremely valuable as chief executive at the LMA and his contribution as well as his opinions will continue to be welcome and respected whenever the LMA needs to canvass our members for their views.
"I sincerely hope that Steve's experience and wisdom will not be lost to the game because I am sure his input will be essential with regard to the future development of football."
