FERGUSON'S BAG OF TRICKS

Sir Alex Ferguson, known to Manchester United fans as 'The Wizard', is continuing his magic act at the top of the table. He's preparing to conjure up another of Fergie's Fledglings from the renowned Old Trafford youth system and the physios have been working wonders on injured Jaap Stam, who is now set for a New Year comeback.

Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke and Teddy Sheringham are all currently ruled out but Ferguson has up his sleeve young Northern Ireland hot-shot David Healy, the 21-year-old striker who has already scored five senior international goals.

Ferguson explained:

"We are unfortunately having one of those wee spells with injuries and the striking department is a bit of a problem. Either Ryan Giggs or Paul Scholes can play up front but I have now got to think about young David Healy and Jonathan Greening. I have to maybe consider giving the natural strikers a chance, the ones who play up there on a more regular basis."

Scholes started in attack alongside Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in Sunday's defeat to Liverpool but was switched with Giggs. Neither could break through. Healy was not even on the bench. Ferguson has been reluctant to force too much too soon on his young stars, saying he wants to rest Wes Brown to prevent the kind of burnout being experienced by Michael Owen and insisting, until now, that Healy wasn't yet ready.

"Preferably you'd blood them when the team is winning and everyone is confident, but we've got a bit of a recovery to do after Sunday. It may temper my thoughts with regards to David, but he could be on the bench - he may even get a start. It is certainly possible now that he'll come into the picture."
