Match Report
Emi Buendía curled a dramatic 95th-minute winner to fire Aston Villa to a pulsating 2-1 victory over Premier League leaders Arsenal which will live long in the memory.
The Argentina international, a late substitute, found the net with a sweet strike from inside the penalty area after a frantic goalmouth scramble – sending a rapturous Villa Park wild.
The unbelievable celebratory scenes deep into injury-time marked almost the last kick of an absorbing encounter which was high in quality.
Matty Cash had earlier drilled the hosts into the lead with a clinical finish in the 36th minute, registering his third goal of the season.
But substitute Leandro Trossard levelled for the Gunners from close range early in the second half.
Emi Martínez tipped over Martin Odegaard’s long-range strike and opposite number David Raya saved well from Ollie Watkins, while Trossard and Donyell Malen also went close amid a fascinating tactical encounter full of goalmouth action.
And it looked as though both in-form sides couldn’t be separated, until Buendía’s late intervention, as Unai Emery’s charges recorded a seventh successive win and 13th in 15 matches in all competitions.
