Everest Performance of the Week: Oxford United

(Nominations each week include Premier League, EFL Championship, EFL League One, and EFL League Two fixtures)

The League Managers Association’s panel, comprising of LMA Chairman Martin O’Neil OBE, Jess Creighton, Les Ferdinand MBE, Sir Alex Ferguson CBE, Barry Fry, Chris Hughton, Mick McCarthy, Stuart Pearce MBE, Clare Tomlinson, Carla Ward, and Rachel Yankey OBE has determined that the Everest Men’s Performance of the Week Award should go to Oxford United for their performance against Bristol City on Sunday 21st September.

Gary Rowett will receive the Everest Men’s Performance of the Week trophy.

Match Report

Oxford United grabbed their first win of the season with an outstanding performance, to earn a 3-1 win away to Bristol City.

A first Oxford goal for Nik Prelec, followed by a Przemyslaw Placheta rocket, put the U’s 2-0 up at the break. Bristol City did get back into the game, but a third late on secured all three points in what was a controlled, confident and brave display from Gary Rowett’s side.

On the form table, undefeated Bristol City at home to an Oxford United side without a league win would have made the U’s long odds with the bookmakers.

But two strong performances in successive 2-2 draws against promotion chasing Coventry City and Leicester City gave Gary Rowett’s side plenty of optimism.

The Head Coach made two changes from the Leicester clash, bringing in Brodie Spencer for the injured Ben Davies, while Nik Prelec got his first start for the also injured Matt Phillips.
