Match Report
Birmingham City Women were crowned WSL2 champions and secured promotion to the Barclays Women’s Super League with a commanding 2-0 victory over Charlton Athletic Women at The Valley.
In a high-stakes title decider, it was Blues who rose to the occasion.
Charlton started on the front foot, enjoying the majority of possession in the early exchanges. But it was Blues who created the first clear opening on 16 minutes, as Batcheba Louis picked out Chelsea Cornet, whose delivery into the box narrowly evaded Wilma Leidhammar with Sophie Whitehouse quick to gather.
Blues continued to threaten. Océane Hurtré’s free-kick moments later almost found Leidhammar again, before Lily Crosthwaite’s run down the right created another opportunity, with Hurtré’s effort at the back post well saved by Whitehouse.
The breakthrough came on 27 minutes. Hurtré showed fight down the left before delivering a pinpoint cross to the back post, where Leidhammar rose to head Blues into a deserved lead.
Blues pushed for a second before the break, with Leidhammar striking the crossbar from a free-kick, before Batcheba Louis fired wide on the rebound. Neve Herron also came close in added time, her header landing on the roof of the net as Blues went into the interval ahead.
