The LMA is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Kevin Keegan OBE, who has died at the age of 75.
Paying tribute to Kevin, LMA Chief Executive Richard Bevan OBE said: "Kevin Keegan stands among the most decorated and iconic figures in English football history.
“As a player, he was a truly world-class, era defining talent. A two-time winner of the Ballon d'Or, Kevin won multiple trophies in both domestic and European competitions during his time as part of the legendary Liverpool and Hamburg sides of the 1970s.
“His managerial career was defined by his ability to galvanise supporters and players alike, orchestrating an attacking, energetic and high-tempo style of play that captured the imagination of football fans across the globe. His time as Manager of Newcastle United is rightly remembered as one of the most exciting and thrilling periods in English football.
“Kevin’s achievements as a manager included winning promotion as champions with three different clubs, yet his legacy extends far beyond trophies and honours. He will be remembered with immense respect, admiration, and affection.
“Kevin has been a valued LMA member throughout his career, fulfilling the duties of LMA President during his time as England Manager and was deservedly inducted into the LMA Hall of Fame.
“Our love and thoughts are with Kevin’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time.”
Kevin Keegan OBE Bio
Kevin enjoyed a playing and managerial career spanning more than four decades. He began his professional career with Scunthorpe United before joining Liverpool under Bill Shankly in 1971. During his six years at Anfield, he won three First Division titles, the FA Cup, two UEFA Cups and the European Cup. He then joined Hamburger SV, where he won the Bundesliga title and was named European Footballer of the Year in 1978 and 1979. He returned to England to play for Southampton and Newcastle United. Internationally, he represented England on 63 occasions scoring 21 goals.
Kevin was appointed manager of Newcastle United in February 1992. He led the club to promotion as First Division champions in his first full season and guided Newcastle to Premier League runners-up finishes in 1995-96 and 1996-97.
He later managed Fulham, leading the club from the Second Division to the First Division in 1999, before taking charge of the England national team. He guided England to qualification for UEFA Euro 2000 and oversaw a 1-0 victory over Germany in the group stage of the tournament. He subsequently managed Manchester City, winning promotion to the Premier League as First Division champions in 2001-02, before returning for a second spell as Newcastle United manager in 2008.
Across his managerial career, Kevin won promotion as champions with Newcastle United, Fulham and Manchester City.
